Escritor australiano. Trabajó como redactor de anuncios publicitarios y en todo tipo de trabajos ocasionales hasta 1988, cuando comenzó a dedicarse exclusivamente a la literatura. Su libro de cuentos El gordo en la historia (1974) se destaca por sus elementos macabros. Sus novelas, más realistas, pero sazonadas con una buena dosis de humor negro, incluyen Bliss [Felicidad] (1981), Illywhacker (1985), Oscar y Lucinda (1988, Premio Booker), La vida extraordinaria de Tristam Smith (1994), Jack Maggs (1997) y La verdadera historia de la banda de Kelly (2000; Premio Booker, 2001).
